Loss to Western a learning moment for budding Brock side

Trust the process.

A young Brock women's soccer team has adopted that mantra and used their 4-0 loss to the visiting Western Mustangs as a learning moment at Alumni Field on Sunday, Sept. 26.

"We have to be patient. We played a good team in Western. I keep telling our girls they have to learn, stay together and keep it together," said head coach John Di Pasquale. "There's a feeling of unity. That first win is going to come. We're going to continue working hard in practice and keep the belief. Keep the confidence. The talent is there, and once the light bulb goes off, it's going to be good."

The Badgers have a high ceiling of talent. Their squad is made up of 13 first-year and four second-year players.

The 'senior' leadership core consists of a handful of third-year players such as captain Lindsay Appleton, midfielder Arnelle Douglas, defender Cassidy Collicutt and Emily Cirone, who missed Sunday's game with an injury.

Appleton said her team would keep their heads up and not let this early-season loss affect the rest of their season.

"It was a tough loss for the girls, but since we're such a young team learning how to play together, I have total faith that we will bounce back from this," said Appleton, who blocked three shots. "We have a lot of soccer left to play and a very talented group of girls, so if we trust the process of building a true team, then we'll find success in the future."

The Badgers' starting 11 included first-year left back Logan Baumhauer, who flexed Brock's physical defence prowess.

Collicut and Cassandra Campanella each registered a shot.

When Western started collecting corners, Di Pasquale reinforced defensive courage when he subbed in central midfielder Grace Tawil. The first-year Teacher Education student battled with timely tackles and forced turnovers in the midfield.

"The number one thing we aim to instill is a true feeling of family, togetherness, which is important," Di Pasquale said. "There's no finger-pointing. Their team chemistry is good. They're disappointed, and I feel for them. I do, but they're going to come back Tuesday and get back to work."

Next, the Badgers (0-2) will look for their first win when they host the Windsor Lancers (0-1-1) at Alumni Field on Friday, Oct. 1. The kickoff is 4 p.m.
