ST CATHARINES - Welcoming the Guelph Gryphons to Canada Games Park for the first OUA season opener in the new home arena, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team earned an exciting 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday afternoon.
Early in the contest it was the Gryphons who opened the scoring just over two minutes into the second period as Mayla Mayer was able to cash in from in tight to the Badgers net. However, it would take just three minutes for the Badgers to answer back and even the game as third-year forward
Mishayla Christensen scored off the assist of
Catriona Cormier to make it 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
An exciting third period saw both teams exchange scoring opportunities, but both goalies were up to the task. Brock goaltender
Tiffany Hsu finished the game with 27 saves, while on the other end Kathryn Raymond notched 21 for the Gryphons.
To close out the season opener and home opener for the Badgers, extra time was needed and fifth-year team captain
Kaitlyn Colonna delivered a game-winning effort as she circled in front of the Gryphons net and deposited the deciding goal.
Prior to the start of the game the Badgers celebrated their success from a year ago, unveiling the 2021-22 McCaw Cup championship banner at Canada Games Park. As well, several Brock women's hockey alumni were in attendance to take in the championship celebrations and take part in the ceremonial puck drop.
Next on the schedule for the Badgers is a showdown with Toronto Varsity Blues at Canada Games Park on Sunday, Oct. 23. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at brocku.universitytickets.com and the game will also be available to stream online at OUA.TV.
