ST CATHARINES – In their final regular season contest at Alumni Field on Friday evening, the Brock Badgers women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the visiting York Lions.
Qualifying for the OUA playoffs as one of the top six teams in the OUA West division, Brock's final positioning in the standings still depends on further results from this last weekend of the regular season. The Badgers 5-5-2 (W-L-T) record will see them potentially reach as high as fourth place or as low as sixth.
On Friday evening, Brock appeared ready to put the pressure to the Lions as they pushed forward throughout the first 10 minutes of the match. However, York rounded into form following the 20
th minute scoring two goals within five minutes of each other to jump ahead 2-0. Taking advantage of a few defensive miscues, Nia Fleming-Thompson capitalized to score both markers for the Lions.
Following the halftime break, Brock returned to their early pressure courtesy the speed of
Shannon Brown and
Heather Brown at the front. However, it wasn't until the 90
th minute that the Badgers were able to garner their best scoring chance when a foul inside the box from the Lions set up Brock with a penalty kick chance. Stepping to the spot, Badgers veteran
Emily Cirone nailed the kick to cut the lead to one, but there wouldn't be enough extra time to find an equalizer.
Prior to the start of the match, the Badgers also honoured their graduating seniors which included Cirone,
Isabelle Newkirk,
Cassidy Collicutt, and
Erica D'Alesio.
Brock will now await results from around the league during this final weekend of the OUA regular season to determine their seeding and playoff opponent. Following matches Saturday and Sunday, an opponent and time will be confirmed for the first round of the OUA playoffs scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 26.
