GUELPH – Traveling to Guelph for a mid-week game versus the Gryphons, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team fell 4-3 in a shootout.
The Badgers were fast out of the gates in the Wednesday night matchup, scoring three first period goals to quickly jump ahead 3-0 after just 20 minutes.
Brock veteran
Paige Cohoon was first to slip a goal past the Guelph goalie, scoring off a rebound just six minutes into the road game.
Late in the first frame,
Catriona Cormier netted her second goal of the season when she snatched a turnover from the Guelph defence before sending a wrist-shot past the goaltender's blocker.
Finally,
Hannah Ryan rounded out the explosive first period for the Badgers with her first career OUA goal, streaking down the left wing before cutting into the slot and sending a perfectly placed shot top-shelf.
As the second period began, the Gryphons were able to get a goal back at the six minute mark. However, Brock goaltender
Kenzie Harmison continued to shut the door on Guelph through nearly the next period and a half, finishing the night with 21 total saves, including two spectacular pad saves to end the second.
Late in the third period, Guelph scored two goals within the final four minutes as they found success crowding the Brock net. Forcing overtime, the Badgers nearly stole the game back with a near goal that would ring off the post, but a shootout was needed and Chihiro Suzuki would score the game-winner for the Gryphons in the fifth round.
Brock will look to bounce back on Saturday, Nov. 19 as they continue their road swing in Waterloo where they will face the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the game available to stream on OUA.TV.
