Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Stephen Leithwood

Balanced scoring, defence lift Badgers over Golden Hawks in home opener

The Brock men's basketball team deployed a balanced scoring attack en route to a 84-58 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in its home opener at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 5.

A total of six Badgers posted double-digit scoring as Isaiah Bujdoso led the offence with 13 points and eight assists, including four rebounds and a pair of steals.

"We have a lot of guys stepping up into different roles, but at the same time we try to put people in positions where everyone can play to their strengths," said head coach Willy Manigat. "They must come together and understand what we're doing as a basketball team. It takes time."

Brock is off to a strong early start to the season with a record of 2-0 and have allowed the least amount of points on average among teams who have played two or more contests.

Manigat said tonight's defensive effort, especially in the second half, was a signal that the defending Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champs are on the right path after a rocky pre-season schedule.

The Badgers went 3-4 in exhibition play against some of the top university teams in Canada.

"Last year is over and there's a long way to go. Sometimes to do that is to play some of the best teams in the country and try to figure out who we are as a basketball team," he said. "They're working hard at it, and I think tonight was an example of that. Once we get into a flow with our defence then everyone can play to their strengths."

Senior forward Jesse Barnes, who collected seven rebounds, was a captain on defence and played a key role in the Badgers limiting the Hawks to just 26 points in the second half.

"For us, it always starts with taking care of the defensive end. Coach is always preaching defence and rebounding, and communication and I was just trying my best to do that," said Barnes, who added an assist and two steals. "More often than not when you play good defence then the offence will come naturally."

Brock outrebounded Laurier 45-26 while disrupting their shooting percentage to just 32.8 per cent from the field (20-of-61).

Up next, the Badgers will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves in back-to-back games on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12. Both games tip off at 8 p.m. Tickets for the Badgers home opener can be purchased by visiting brocku.universitytickets.com, while all Brock basketball games will be available to stream on OUA.TV.
