Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Stephen Leithwood

Brown, Badgers complete comeback to win home opener

Theresa Brown scored the game-winning basket and the Brock women's basketball team held on to celebrate a 60-56 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks during their home opener at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Brown, who finished the night with 14 points, scored a long two-pointer with less than a minute remaining as the Badgers worked their way back from an 11-point deficit heading into the final frame.

It was Brown's first home opener as a Badger after sitting out last season as a redshirt. She transferred to Brock from Sheridan College in 2021.

"Playing in my first home opener as a Badger feels so amazing. It's rewarding to finally put on this jersey and play basketball with a team I've been practicing with for a year," said Brown, a Child & Youth Studies student from Brampton. "The last quarter was intense, but we stayed focused as a team and played together. We got the job done. It was our first true test of adversity and we rose to the occasion."

Second-year guard Madalyn Weinert led all Badgers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Olivia Fiorucci enjoyed a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

Second-year forward Madison MacInnis secured eight rebounds and three assists, including three steals.

Brock outscored Laurier 21-6 in the fourth quarter as Weinert tied the game up 54-54 with three minutes remaining.

"We were in complete control of the game, defensively and offensively. Give these women credit for playing together," said head coach Mike Rao. "The last five minutes was good to watch, and it was great to watch Theresa get into her game. Tonight, she showed the leader she truly is."

For Laurier, Miranda Campbell led registered a game-high 21 points.

Up next, the Badgers prepare for a pair of home games versus the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12 at Bob Davis Gymnasium. Both games tip off at 6 p.m. Tickets for the contest can be purchased at brocku.universitytickets.com, while the game is also available online via OUA.TV.
