ST. CATHARINES – Beginning their final weekend of action for the fall semester at home in Canada Games Park, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team fell 3-1 to the No. 6 nationally ranked Nipissing Lakers on Friday night.
In tough against a top ranked national contender, the Badgers weathered an early storm as the Lakers came out looking to score quickly compiling an early 15-4 shot advantage through the first period. Despite standing tall as much as they could, Nipissing did break through for the first goal of the game near the midway mark of the opening frame as Madison Desmerais was able to bang in a loose puck from a crowd in front of the net.
Returning to the ice in the second period down by one, Brock was the aggressor early as
Claudia Murphy scored her first of the season at the nine minute mark to even the contest 1-1.
However, with only one regulation loss so far this season Nipissing showed why they stand atop the standings by taking advantage of a powerplay late in the second frame to jump back ahead courtesy the stick of Lana Duriez.
An insurance marker from the Lakers early in the third put the Badgers on the back-foot. Eventually possessing a 6-on-4 advantage with the goalie pulled and a late Nipissing penalty, Brock was still unable to find another goal.
Badgers goaltender
Tiffany Hsu played well making several cross crease saves en route to 28 total saves on the night, while Lakers goalie Chantelle Sandquist finished with 19.
Brock will conclude their fall semester games with another home game at Canada Games Park tomorrow afternoon challenging the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. Tickets for the game can be purchased at
