Badgers' scoring surge shocks Thunderwolves

The Brock Badgers team dominated a five-goal third period to tame the Lakehead Thunderwolves in their return to Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's hockey action at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Thursday, Feb. 10.

The Badgers defeated the Thunderwolves 6-2 as they showed no signs of rust since playing their last game on Nov. 27, 2021.

A total of five Badgers made their OUA debuts as Justin Kyle, Cole Tymkin, Zachary Taylor, Christophe Cote and goaltender Mario Peccia each hit the ice in Brock sweaters.

Peccia made 28 saves for his first win.

Brock defenceman Cole Thiessen's power-play goal midway through the third period stood as the game-winner.

"It's been a long layoff, so it was great to be back playing with the guys. We've been practicing hard, and it was rewarding to see some results," said Thiessen. "We're cherishing the opportunity at hand and we're looking forward to the second half."

Captain Jared Marino finished with two goals as Tymkin, Jacob Roach and Tyler Rollo each found the back of the net.

Lakehead opened the scoring when a bouncing puck flew over Peccia's head. However, Marino replied just 25 seconds later with a slap shot from the point.

Roach finished off a sharp passing play courtesy of Thiessen and Christian Girhiny to give Brock a 2-1 lead before the end of the first period.

The second period featured a penalty shot by Frankie Pucci, yet Thunderwolves netminder Brock Aiken made the save.

Thiessen's power-play goal at 8:25 would signal a scoring rush for the rest of the frame.

"We had some good puck movement on the power play. Marino made a great play getting the puck to the net, and I saw a loose puck in front, dove and luckily got my stick on it," Thiessen said. "Always nice to get the first one of the season out of the way."

Lakehead's Joe Mack netted a short-handed goal to pull the T-Wolves within one, but the Badgers fired in three goals in just 63 seconds - courtesy of Marino, Rollo and Tymkin, who netted his first OUA career goal – to seal the victory.

Taylor tallied two assists while Kyle, Pucci, Adam Berg, Christian DeDonato and Brack each contributed an assist.
