The Brock women's hockey team picked up a point in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) standings despite a 4-3 overtime loss to the Western Mustangs in London on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Second-year forward Emma Irwin recorded the first multi-goal game of her OUA career with back-to-back markers. Morgan Dezell also netted her first goal of the 2021-22 campaign.
The Badgers were determined to make up for an earlier 3-1 home loss to Western on Thursday, Feb. 10.
"We had a tough loss on Thursday. Everyone knew we had to keep pushing, keep our heads up and not give up," Irwin said.
After the first frame, Brock trailed 2-0, but Irwin sparked the offence with a goal early in the second.
"Cassidy Maplethorpe was able to get a shot on net, and I was just there to finish the rebound," Irwin said. "It got the team fired up and back into it."
The Medical Sciences student scored her second of the night just four minutes later, thanks to a passing attack by Madison Cronkwright and Allison Stevenson.
Western restored their lead late in the second as Mustangs forward Manson Beishuizen found the back of the net.
The Mustangs continued to control the play in the third; however, the Badgers pulled goaltender Tiffany Hsu in favour of the extra attacker with less than two minutes remaining.
Dezell capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to tie the game up 3-3 at 18:58 and send it into overtime. Rebekah Feld was credited with the assist.
In overtime, Emma Suitor scored the game-winner for Western.
The Badgers outshot the Mustangs 34-25, and their penalty kill unit stymied all four of Western's power-play chances.
Up next, the Badgers (5-6) host the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-7) on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 2:15 p.m. Tickets must be purchased online.
