Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Stephen Leithwood

Maplethorpe’s buzzer beater ends Badgers’ losing skid

Better late than never.

Cassidy Maplethorpe beat the final buzzer to lift the Brock women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

She scored with 0.2 seconds left on the game clock.

"I saw a bouncing puck and just took a swing at it," Maplethorpe said. "We didn't give up. Eight seconds is more than enough time to score, and that's all we needed."

The game was tied 1-1 with eight seconds left in regulation when head coach Margot Page called a timeout before her team took an offensive zone faceoff.

The Hawks won the draw and attempted to clear the puck off the glass, but defenceman Kaitlyn Colonna kept the play alive.

Emma Irwin threaded the puck through traffic to find Maplethorpe in a goalmouth scramble.

Maplethorpe's team-leading sixth goal of the season ended a five-game losing skid for the Badgers, who also haven't won at home since Nov. 11.

"It means a lot to get this first win of the second half," Maplethorpe said. "We can put that behind us and look forward to the second half of the season."

Brock goaltender Tiffany Hsu made 26 saves for the win.

Carley Blomberg opened the scoring at 12:11 of the second. Cassidy Maplethorpe and Madison Cronkwright each picked up an assist.

Laurier ended Hsu's bid for a shutout by scoring with less than five minutes remaining in the third period.

"In the third, it looked like we were playing not to lose instead of playing to win, but once Laurier scored, our team was riled up, and you could see that change in them," Page said. "They found a way to win. This team is special because they're a no-quit team. They believe in each other and their skill."

Brock outshot their opponent for the fourth consecutive game, as the Badgers fired 36 shots at Laurier's goal.

Up next, the Badgers (6-6) travel to Waterloo to face the Warriors on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Livestream the game on OUA.tv.
