Brock women's hockey team wins first playoff game in over a decade

The Brock women's hockey team won its first playoff game in over a decade.

In a single-elimination knockout game, the Badgers defeated the Gryphons 2-1 in Guelph during Round 2 of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) playoffs on Saturday, March 12.

Emma Irwin and Claudia Murphy each scored a goal as goaltender Tiffany Hsu made 29 saves to backstop the Badgers to their first playoff win since 2009.

"This win means absolutely everything to myself and the team. We worked so hard for this," said captain Kaitlyn Colonna. "We're out here for each other. We lose together and win together. We came into this game with the mentality that it's ours to take."

Brock advances to the OUA semifinal where they will host the Western Mustangs on Wednesday, March 16 at Seymour-Hannah Arena. Game time is pending.

The winner will advance to the McCaw Cup final.

Second-year forward Claudia Murphy's goal at 2:05 of the third period would stand as the game-winner. Catriona Cormier added an assist.

"The puck was bouncy tonight. Guelph set up a lot of screen-shots. It was tough to see the puck, but I think I did a decent job of tracking it," Hsu said. "Winning this game means everything to this team. I'm excited, especially for our seniors. I want to finish strong for them."

Emma Irwin opened the scoring with a power-play goal early in the second period. Cassidy Maplethorpe and Carley Blomberg each recorded an assist.

Guelph ended Hsu's bid for a shutout with a goal at the 19-minute mark of the third.
