Badgers women’s hockey team arrives in PEI with sights on U SPORTS title

The Brock Badgers stepped onto the ice at UPEI in Charlottetown Tuesday, March 22 for their first practice at the U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships, marking the start of the next leg of what has been a remarkable 2021-22 season journey.

The team, which comes into the nationals ranked No. 4 of the eight teams, left St. Catharines for the airport Monday morning, less than 30 hours after arriving back home from winning the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's hockey title in North Bay.

It was the first-ever OUA title for the women's hockey team, and it came over the Nipissing Lakers, who are also in Charlottetown for the nationals.

"When you get to an event, the first thing you want to do is get into the facility you're playing in and to be able to do that is awesome," said head coach Margot Page. "The kids had a great skate. There's so much good energy going on and a really good vibe on the team. They had a really good practice so hopefully, we can keep that going."

The Badgers will have two more days of practice before opening their U SPORTS campaign Friday, March 25 at 2 p.m. (all times EST) against the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies. The tournament itself will get underway Thursday with No. 2 UNB playing No. 7 McGill and No. 3 UBC playing No. 6 Nipissing. The other quarter-final matchup will see No. 1 Concordia playing No. 8 UPEI Friday.

"The girls are super excited to be here. It's a dream come true to be at nationals," said Badgers captain and Kinesiology student Kaitlyn Colonna. "We're looking forward to our first game. We're just focused on prepping as much as we can so we're ready to go on Friday."

Brock's leading scorer, Medical Sciences student Cassidy Maplethorpe, said winning the OUA title showed the competition the Badgers aren't to be taken lightly.

"It says a lot about our team, that we're a winning team and a championship team.," she said. "A lot of people saw us as the underdogs all season. We've been trying to prove we're not underdogs and that teams should be scared of us."

After the Thursday and Friday quarter-final matchups, the consolation and championship semifinals will be held Saturday. Sunday's action will see the fifth-place game at 10 a.m., the bronze game at 1:30 p.m. and the gold medal game at 5 p.m.
