Badgers take to the court for first game at U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championships

Things didn't go according to plan as the No. 2 Brock women's volleyball team made its first appearance at the national championships on Friday, March 25.

The Badgers stepped onto the court for the first time at the U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championships at the University of Calgary, losing 3-0 (20-25, 14-25, 21-25) to the No. 7 Mount Royal Cougars in the quarter-final to open the tournament at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Gigi Markotic was named Player of the Match for Brock. The second-year right side tallied two kills on six swings, including a pair of blocks.

"We fought and we're going to learn from this. It's the first year for our team playing at nationals, so competing at this level is a good experience," said Markotic. "We're looking forward to doing better next game."

Brock advances to the consolation semifinal Saturday, March 26 where they will play No. 6 Dalhousie at 3 p.m. EST.

The Badgers didn't look like themselves in the opener as they committed 24 errors while hitting for a season-low .101, but there were multiple moments of positivity as Brock found its groove in the third while working to build upon their leads.

Head coach Steve Delaney said the experience on the national stage is invaluable for his squad, which received support from a contingent of Brock Badgers fans who made the trip to Calgary.

"We needed a match where we were being pushed like that, so we could learn how to play ourselves out of it. We haven't had that all season long," Delaney said. "Mount Royal is a good team, but we didn't play our game. We're going to learn from this, so we can be better."

Brock traded kills with Mount Royal through the first set before the Cougars pulled away.

Emily Foest opened the second with a quick kill on a pass from setter Sara Rohr, who would later add emphatic scores alongside Laurin Ainsworth who registered three kills in the set.

Rohr finished with 26 assists, five digs and three blocks.

First-year outside hitters Foest and Sadie Dick each racked up seven kills, and combined for six digs. Aleiah Torres added 11 digs.

Delaney noted there were several positive moments throughout the first match of the tournament.

"Gigi came in and played great. Laurin (Ainsworth) was fantastic and when Alanna Norris came in, she did everything she was supposed to do. Jaimie Holland got in there and did some good things on the court," he said. "There are a lot of positives to take away from today, but the one we're focusing on is that there is another level of volleyball we have to play at. We have to bring our A-game if we're going to compete with the big teams."
