Brock women’s hockey team runs into Saskatchewan wall

Kaitlyn Colonna waited on the edge of the ice at University of Prince Edward Island's Maclauchlan Arena Friday, March 25 and consoled every one of her teammates on the Brock Badgers women's hockey team.

The Badgers lost the opening game of the U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships 4-0 to the Saskatchewan Huskies, moving them into the consolation round and ending any dreams of a national title.

"The toughest part is we didn't play the game we know we can play," said Colonna, a fourth-year Kinesiology student from Mississauga and the team's captain. "We know we're a better team. We started off the game strong and had quite a few chances in their end, but we just couldn't bury them."

For Brock head coach Margot Page, every minute of play at this level is a learning opportunity and one more step in an important year of new heights for the program, which included winning the Ontario University Athletics championship last weekend.

"We said 'where would you rather be right now? Done and back at home? Or here with the opportunity to play another one or two games?'" she said after the loss.

The game started out as a scoreless tie until six minutes into the second period when Huskies forward Sara Kendall scored. Saskatchewan extended the lead to 3-0 with two goals in first four minutes from Brooklyn Stevely and Kara Kondrat. An empty net-goal late in the game from Nicole Fry and solid goaltending from the Huskies' Camryn Drever made it a 4-0 shutout win.

"That's a very good team and a very good goalie," said Page. "We knew they would be relentless and they were. For us, it helps us prepare again for another level of hockey."

Brock's campaign at the Nationals isn't over just yet. The Badgers will play in the consolation semifinal Saturday at noon EST against the loser of the fourth quarter-final match of the tournament between No 1 seed Concordia and the hosting UPEI.

"We win as a team and lose as a team, so the best we can do is not get down on each other, turn it around and do what we can do as a team," Colonna said.

Page agreed.

"They'll take the time to be upset and frustrated, and hopefully by the time we get back to the hotel we can regroup and start to get ready for the next game," she said.
