Brock women’s basketball team suffers ‘devastating’ loss at OUA Championships

It was March Madness inside Bob Davis Gymnasium at Brock University on Saturday, March 26.

The Brock Badgers suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss at home during the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Critelli Cup Women's Basketball Championships.

The No. 2 Badgers narrowly lost 72-70 in overtime to the No. 3 Rams.

"It's devastating," said captain Mackenzie Robinson. "We've come so far with such a big expectation in mind, so we're disappointed because, obviously, we wanted that Cup. We wanted to win."

The Rams got payback from the 2020 season when the Badgers captured their first championship since 1983 on the Rams' court in Toronto.

"We were shocked. The Rams were down, but they came out with a press and we didn't do enough to respond to that," said Robinson, who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Badgers built a sizable lead and led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter. However, Brock's double-digit lead evaporated with five minutes remaining as the Rams overcame the strong home-court support with cheers of 'Let's Go Badgers' resonating through Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Rams tied the game 67-67 with a minute and 20 seconds remaining. Both teams battled before Robinson grabbed a critical defensive rebound to hold on and send the game into that fateful overtime.

"I'm disappointed because I didn't think we played up to our standard," said head coach Mike Rao. "We were a little too selfish at times. At the end of the day, we didn't help each other. We'll look to get it right as we head into the U SPORTS tournament."

Brock's first-year guard, Madalyn Weinert, earned a double-double of her own as she led all players with 25 points and collected 11 boards.

The loss was Brock's first of the season and ends the win streak at 14 victories. The Badgers clawed their way through a rollercoaster season to reach a second straight appearance at the OUA Championships.

"We've overcome a lot of hurdles this season. With COVID always looming, our season of training and keeping a rhythm of playing games wasn't easy," Robinson said. "No matter what happens this group keeps fighting."

Robinson and the Badgers are now preparing for their second consecutive trip to the U SPORTS Women's Basketball Championships in Kingston from March 31 to April 3.

A fifth-year guard and Master of Education student from Collingwood, Robinson is looking forward to stepping onto the court and competing at nationals after missing out with an injury two years ago.

"The fact that we made it to the finals and now we get to return to nationals and I get to play is exciting," Robinson said. "Two years ago, it wasn't the same feeling. It was great being there and showing up for that group of women, but I'm ecstatic that I get to tie up the shoes and step onto that court."
