Brock men’s basketball team looks to ‘stick to the game plan’ in Edmonton

The Brock Badgers arrived in Edmonton Tuesday morning and took the day to get acclimatized to the surroundings before hitting the practice courts at the University of Alberta on Wednesday and Thursday.

After securing the OUA title, the Badgers look to bring home more hardware and it all begins as the 2022 U SPORTS Men's Final 8 are set to begin at the Saville Community Sports Centre on Friday, April 1. WATCH | TICKETS

Despite being more than 3,000 kilometres away from St. Catharines, the Badgers are unfazed and looking to stick to the game plan they've used to obtain success all season.

Their sights are set on being in the gold-medal game on Sunday, April 3 at 8 p.m.

"It's about doing what we do and just keeping the routine and what we are all about the same," said OUA West Coach of the Year Willy Manigat. "It's a gym like any other gym. We've been on the road before, and it's not the first time these guys have been on the road as basketball players. We're just going to continue to work and be confident in the game plan."

For the first time in program history, the Badgers enter the national tournament as the No. 1 seed. Brock is in the opening game on Friday, April 1 against the No. 8 University of Saskatchewan Huskies at 3 p.m. EST.

The Huskies clinched a bronze medal in the Canada West conference, and have won nine of their last 11 games. In nine meetings with Saskatchewan, the Badgers are 4-5 versus the Huskies dating back to 1982.

The winner advances to the championship semifinal on Saturday, April 2 at 8 p.m. EST. The losing team enters the consolation semifinal, also on Saturday, at 3 p.m.

"We're just focusing on us, it's always been about us, that's all that matters is what we do," said fourth-year guard Kascius Small-Martin. "If we do what we can do to the best of our abilities then we will be in a good place no matter where we play."

Brock went 14-2 in the regular season, and 3-0 in the OUA playoffs to secure their first conference title, the Wilson Cup, since 1992 when they went on to win their first national championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

"We are happy to be here. I think any team that's here this time of the year is happy to be here, but we know there is more work to be done and it starts with Saskatchewan on Friday and we go from there," added Manigat. "We're just sticking to the plan and the process and doing what works for us."
