Rain clouds ruin Homecoming result for women's soccer

ST CATHARINES - Battling both their opponents on the day a never-ending downpour of rain, the Brock Badgers women's soccer team came up short in a 3-1 defeat to the No. 10 Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

During the final day of Brock University's Homecoming festivities the women's match was quickly overtaken by inclement weather as the rain began to pour just five minutes into the midday contest. Just as the rain began, Western was first to get on the board as Mackenzie Bilotta was able to find the back of the net at the eight minute mark. During the sequence of the goal two key Badgers players showed signs of injury as veteran midfielder Juliana Andolina and keeper Emma Hendrie came up slow from the turf following the marker. Andolina would be subbed out just three minutes late, while Hendrie would switch out at halftime with the thought of five more regular season games taking priority.

The Badgers didn't take to long to respond to the one goal deficit as Brianna Bishop evened the game just 10 minutes late in the 18th minute off a corner kick. However, the Mustangs restored the one goal lead in the 40th minute to take a 2-1 advantage into the half.

Following the break, Annie Thivierge shined for the Badgers in net. Coming in to see her first action of the season the first-year athlete would record six total saves as the pressure from Western continued. A final insurance marker would be tallied by the Mustangs in the 74th minute.

Brock will look to get back on track this coming Friday evening, challenging the McMaster Marauders at Alumni Field on Sept. 30. Action is set to kick off at 6 p.m. with the game also being streamed via OUA.TV.
