THOROLD - The Brock Badgers women's hockey team suffered heartbreak in the second game of a back-to-back, falling to the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 at Canada Games Park on Saturday afternoon.
After coming out of the gates strong with a 1-0 lead thanks to a
Claudia Murphy goal just two minutes into the first period, Brock stayed relatively quiet throughout the rest of the contest. Guelph responded with a goal of their own later in the first period, before the deadlocked match saw a deciding goal in the final seconds of the third period.
Disaster struck for Brock with just 5.1 seconds remaining in regulation, when Guelph centre Tiana Faccio found the back of the net to put the game away 2-1.
Both teams stayed resilient with their scoring opportunities as Brock totaled 26 shots on goal and Guelph finished with 28. Brock defence
Kaitlyn Colonna contributed on the lone Badgers goal, while starting goalie
Kenzie Harmison finished the afternoon with 26 total saves.
The Badgers wil compete in another back-to-back next week beginning on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. versus the Laurier Golden Hawks at Canada Games Park, before heading to Toronto to face the Varsity Blues on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the home game can be purchased at brocku.universitytickets.com, while both games will also be streamed on OUA.tv.
