Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Luke O'Brien

Brock shut out by No. 1 team in the country

TORONTO - The Brock Badgers women's hockey team dropped Saturday's outing by a score of 2-0 to the No. 1 nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena.

Coming off of a 3-1 against Laurier on Friday night, the Badgers were unable to come out on top against the current top team in the country and their goaltender Madeline Albert, who remains undefeated on the season.

Brock's penalty kill went to work early, killing off a Toronto powerplay just 37 seconds into the game. However, the Varsity Blues were able to open the scoring just three minutes later to take a 1-0 lead and 11-5 shot advantage over the Badgers into the first intermission.

The Badgers continued to struggle staying out of penalty trouble in the second period taking three minor penalties, but Brock was able to kill off all three opportunities. Both goaltenders stood tall in the second period, as neither team was able to score a goal.

As the Varsity Blues found themselves in the penalty box three times in the third period, a chance presented itself, but the Badgers were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. An insurance powerplay goal midway through the final period for Toronto ensured the home ice win for the nationally leaders.

Badgers starting goalie Kenzie Harmison played exceptionally well against the tough opponent turning aisde 25 shots in the loss, while Toronto's Madeline Albert stopped all 18 shots she faced.

Next, the Badgers are back in action on Friday, Jan. 27 when they visit the TMU Bold. An early puck drop is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. The game can be streamed on OUA.TV.
