Badgers complete final tune up at Western Open

LONDON - With just two weeks remaining until the OUA provincial championships in Hamilton, the Brock Badgers men's and women's wrestling teams participated in their final invitational event competing at the Western Open this past weekend in London.

The Badgers finished second overall to the host Mustangs in the team category, followed by Guelph in third.

The Brock men claimed first in their bracket with 58 points scored, ahead of Western (45) and TMU (25). Meanwhile a shorthanded women's side, which saw some members away competing at the Ontario Junior Championships, placed third with 27 points trailing Guelph (33) and Western (56). 

For the men, veteran Max Budgey delivered the top result finishing in first place during the men's 76kg event. Budgey won all three of his matches by technical fall defeating Guelph 10-0, Carleton 12-1, and Brock WC 10-0. Joining Budgey on the top step, teammate Roger Li also placed first in the men's 125kg event, defeating his McMaster opponent twice. The Badgers also saw podium results from Gabreil Sementilli who placed second in the 57kg category, Gabreil Blanchette was second in 65kg, Mark Summers placed second in the 90kg, 

On the women's side of the draw, Brock earned two second place results including Mia Friesen at 59kg and Michaela Rankin at 63kg. Jessica Tillmanns also reached the podium for the Badgers placing third overall in the 63kg event.

Adding to the weekend, Bronwyn MacGregor claimed first in the junior women's 62kg event at the Ontario Junior Championships defeating Lakehead WC, McMaster, and GTA Alliance. Fellow Brock women's teammate Vanessa Keefe also took home first place at the provincial event defeating Sarnia Bluewater WC, McMaster, and fellow Badger Rachel Hall to claim the junior women 72kg category.

Following a busy competition schedule, the Badgers will now set their sights on repeating as both men's and women's provincial champions for the seventh consecutive season as they next head to Hamilton for the OUA Championships hosted by McMaster University on Saturday, Feb. 11.
