Badgers show fight in doubleheader in London

The Brock Badgers fell to both the Guelph Gryphons 11-5 and McMaster Marauders 12-9 in doubleheader action in London, Ont., on Saturday (Sept. 30).  

Game 1: Brock 5 Guelph 11 

In the first game of the day, the Badgers suffered an 11-5 defeat to the Gryphons. 

The Gryphons scored two goals within the first five minutes to open the scoring. Brock cut the lead in half with 5:22 remaining off the stick of Emmery Borg. Guelph took a 3-1 lead into the first-quarter break. 

Guelph outscored the Badgers 2-1 in the second quarter to maintain the advantage.  

Brock used goals from Olivia Dion, Lucy Lee and Olivia Smith to outscore the Gryphons in the third quarter by a score of 3-2. Lee's goal was her second of the game. Despite the offensive output, the Gryphons still held the lead at 7-5. 

The Gryphons used a strong fourth quarter to add to their lead and take the contest 11-5. 

Mackenzie Aikin and Jenna Gernjn added assists in the contest.  

Game 2: Brock 9 McMaster 12 

The second contest of the day saw the Badgers drop a close 12-9 decision the Maruaders.  

The first quarter was full of back-and-forth action as both teams scored four goals. For the Badgers, Aikin, Smith along with Erin Morris and Mackenzie Swigwadja all found the back of the net.  

In the second, the Badgers went blow for blow with the Marauders, scoring two apiece. Abbey Penner and Swigwadja scored for Brock. 

The Badgers took their first lead of the weekend in the third quarter, scoring two courtesy of Kennedy Smith. The Vineland, Ont., product earned a hat trick in the contest. With 15 minutes left to play, the Badgers held an 8-7 lead. 

McMaster used a strong fourth quarter, netting five goals as compared to Brock's one to take the contest 12-9. Ellie Szkwyra was the lone scorer for the Badgers in the quarter. 

Aikin, Dion, Szkwyra, Swigwadja and Ryanne Logan contributed one helper each. 

A total of seven cards were handed out in the game, with four going to McMaster and three given to Brock.  

Smith finished the day with four goals on the day to lead all Badgers. 

Brock (0-6) will be seeking their first win of the year as they head to Hamilton to face off against the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-5) and the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (1-5) on Saturday, Oct. 14. Game times are set for 8:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
