The Brock Badgers men's basketball team got their preseason schedule started at home this past weekend (Oct. 6-8) at the Brock Murray Classic and finished with a 2-1 record.
Game #1: Brock 74 Cape Breton 79
On the first day of the tournament, the Badgers suffered a close 79-74 defeat to the Cape Breton Capers.
Brock went into halftime up 45-42 as they utiltized a strong second quarter where they outscored the Capers 29-24. In the next two quarters, the Capers put up 37 points as compared to Brock's 29, which allowed the team from Cape Breton to come away with the 79-74 win.
The Badgers received balanced scoring with three players (Jevon Brown, Kevaughn Ellis, Georges Mfwamba Ngandu) scoring in double figures. Ellis led all Badgers with 14, while Jordan Tchuente contributed a team-high five assists and five rebounds in the loss.
Game #2: Brock 84 Lethbridge 71
The Badgers bounced back on Day 2 of the Brock Murray Classic, winning by 13 points over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
It was a tight first quarter with Brock holding a small three-point lead. In the second, the Badgers exploded for 34 points and headed into half time with a 54-38 advantage. The third saw the Badgers continue to outscore the Pronghorns as the lead ballooned to twenty-four-points. The Lethbridge comeback attempt was held off by the Brock defence as the Badgers earned their first victory of the preseason by a score of 84-71.
Davanté Hackett had a sensational contest, shooting 6/7 from the field, the three-point line and the free-throw line. The first-year guard from Brampton ended with a game-high 24 points. Ellis and Anthony Heyes also finished in double digits.
Heyes distributed a team-high five assists, while Michael Okeke ruled the paint with a game-high eight rebounds. The Badgers shot 50% from the three-point line, contributing to 39 of their 84 points.
Game #3: Brock 81 Waterloo 59
It was an emphatic end to the tournament for the Badgers as they took down the Waterloo Warriors 81-59 on Sunday.
The first half saw the Badgers struggle to find scoring, putting up five in the first quarter and 14 in the second. The second half was a completely different story for the Badgers as they reversed a 24-19 halftime deficit to go up 53-52 after 30 minutes. A strong 28-7 fourth quarter sealed a massive 22-point win.
Jordan Tchuente led the squad with 22 points and was two rebounds and two assists shy of a triple-double. Jevon Brown scored 18, while Heyes was also in double digits with 13. Mfwamba Ngandu led all players with 11 rebounds. The Badgers used a suffocating defence to force 15 steals in the game, allowing then to pull away from the Warriors in the second half.
Brock will remain at home on Saturday (Oct. 14) as they host an exhibition contest against the Centennial Colts (Ontario Colleges Athletics Association) at 6 p.m.
