Badgers defeat Gryphons for third consecutive victory

In their first road game of the season, the Brock Badgers came away victorious, defeating the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 4-2 on Thursday (Oct. 12) night.

The Badgers put the pressure on early in the first. Third-year centre Tyler Burnie made a pass over to sophomore Ethan Sims at the 5:40 mark, who put it past the glove of Guelph goaltender Tanner Wickware for his second of the season. The Gryphons answered with 11:54 left in the period as Anthony Tabak put in his first of the year. Despite outshooting the Gryphons 7-3 and controlling the pace of the game, the Badgers remained tied with Guelph after one period of play.

In the second, the Badgers struck again as junior forward Matthew O'Brien scored his first of the season and second of his career. The goal came with 16:33 left in the period. Shots were quite even in the second as Brock fired 13 on net, while Guelph put up 12 of their own.

Guelph started with a quick goal as they scored their second just 1:27 into the third period. Brock dominated in shots in the third, putting up an impressive 19 compared to Guelph's six. This pressure was rewarded when defenceman Zach Taylor threaded a pass in front of the net for first-year forward Riley Gannon, who put the puck past the blocker side of Wickware for Brock's third goal. A Burnie empty netter sealed the game for the Badgers as they skated away with a 4-2 win.

First-year goaltender Connor Ungar made his third straight start between the pipes, making 20 saves for his third win.

Up next, the Badgers (3-0-0) travel for the second game of a back-to-back to face off against the Western Mustangs (0-2-0) on Friday (Oct. 13) at 7:30 p.m. Catch the action on OUA.tv.
