Badgers roll past Mustangs in London

The Brock Badgers continued their strong start to the regular season by defeating the Western Mustangs 5-1 on Friday (Oct. 13) night.

Much like yesterday's contest, the Badgers got on the board early, putting pressure on the opposition. Fifth-year centre Justin Brack earned his first of three assists on the evening by stealing the puck off a Western defender and threading it to left winger Jared Marino for Brock's first goal.

In the middle of the first period, the Badgers added two more. First-year forward Ryan Stepien scored his first of the year, while Matthew Riva earned his second of the season off a sensational play. The sophomore forward managed to fire the puck in the back of the net despite being taken down to the ice by a Mustang player.

First-year defenceman Ryan Thompson made it four goals in the period with a shot from the point. The Badgers outshot the Mustangs 16-10 in the first.

The lone goal in the second period was scored by the Western Mustangs as Christiano Aiello earned his second of the year. The Mustangs attempted to take some momentum back with 15 shots in the period compared to Brock's 10.

The Brock defence held strong in the third, preventing any more Western goals in the game. Sophomore centre Tyler Burnie then put in his team-high fourth goal of the season to make it 5-1 for the Badgers. Burnie now is second in the OUA in goals scored, trailing Queen's Nolan Hutcheson by one.

Goaltender Connor Ungar earns his fourth win of the season, good for first in the province. The Calgary product made 31 saves on the evening and now carries a 1.72 goals against average and a .940 save percentage on the season.

Brock fired 11 shots in the period to finish with a total of 37, while Western settled for 32.

Up next, the Badgers (4-0-0) are back at home on Friday, October 20 as they welcome in the Queen's Gaels (2-0-0) for a battle of two undefeated squads. You can watch the game on OUA.tv.
