The Brock Badgers women's hockey team opened their season with a 1-0 shutout victory against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday (Oct. 14) in Waterloo
The first period saw both teams have opportunities but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Badgers fired on four shots in the period, while the Golden Hawks put up seven of their own.
Brock put a lot of pressure in the second period, firing an impressive 18 shots on Laurier goaltender Acadia Carlson. This continued offensive attack was finally rewarded with 3:27 left. Fourth-year defender Madelyn Walsh fired a shot from the point which went past Carlson for Brock's first goal of the game and season.
The Golden Hawks reserved the momentum, putting pressure of their own in the third as they fired 14 shots on net as compared to Brock's seven. However, the defence remained stingy throughout the contest and fourth-year goaltender Kenzie Harmison was up to the task. The Badgers held on for the 1-0 victory.
Both teams were unable to take advantage of power-play opportunities as Brock went 0/6, while Laurier was 0/5.
Brock outshot Laurier 29-25.
Harmison made 25 saves for the second shutout win of her career.
Up next, the Badgers (0-0-0) remain on the road as they travel to Toronto to face off against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, October 21 at 7 p.m. The Badgers will then host the Nipissing Lakers for their home opener on Sunday, October 22 at 6 p.m.
