Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Aidan Cvetich

Walsh scores two against former squad, Badgers down No. 3 Varsity Blues

The Brock Badgers women's hockey team secured a big 3-1 road win Saturday (Oct. 21) night against the reigning OUA champions and nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Badgers are coming off of a 1-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks last Saturday in their first game of the year.

Brock got out to a hot start thanks to former Varsity Blue, Madelyn Walsh

Walsh played four seasons at Toronto, winning the OUA championship twice in her tenure with the team. Now at Brock for her graduate studies, the defender scored two goals in the first period to get the Badgers out in front.

The first goal came just over four minutes into the game as Walsh took a pass from Jenna Duarte at the blue line and then rifled a shot through a crowd in front of the net to open the scoring in the game.

Later in the period while on the powerplay, Walsh picked up the puck in the defensive zone and went coast-to-coast, weaving through Varsity Blues' defenders before shelfing a wrist-shot for a highlight-reel goal and a two-goal lead for the Badgers at the end of the first period.

The second period saw lots of penalties and lots of back-and-forth play between the two teams with Kenzie Harmison making some great saves to keep the Badgers ahead by two goals.

In the third period, the Varsity Blues really put the pressure on trying to get their offense started, bombarding Harmison with shots early. Toronto scored with just under five minutes left in the game to cut the Brock lead to just one, but an Allison Moore empty net goal with 45 seconds left secured a 3-1 victory for the Badgers.

Walsh's two goals on the night brings her total up to three through the Badgers' first two games of the season, putting her atop the league leaderboard in that category.

Moore had a goal and an assist, giving her three points on the year, which is tied for second in the province.

Harmison made 26 saves on the night, which gives her an outstanding 0.981 save percentage through the first two games, good for second in the province. The Smith Falls, Ont product has two wins on the year, tying her for the league lead.

Next up, the Badgers (2-0) will look to keep their undefeated start to the season going when they host the Nipissing Lakers (2-1) for their home opener tomorrow night (Oct. 22) at 6 p.m. at Canada Games Park.
