Badgers secure first win since 2021 with victory over Ridgebacks

The Brock Badgers split their doubleheader in Hamilton on Saturday (Oct. 14), falling 22-7 to the Toronto Varsity Blues, before winning 14-12 over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

Game 1: Brock 7 Toronto 22

The morning opener of Brock's doubleheader saw the Badgers fall 22-7 to the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Brock Badgers opened their scoring against Toronto through Lucy Lee. Third year-attack Mackenzie Shigwadja netted twice in the loss, while fellow third year Kyla McGuire recorded an impressive four-game goal. Shigwadja had one assist, while veteran midfielder Rachel Woods led the team with two helpers.

Game 2: Brock 14 Ontario Tech 12

Brock's second game of their doubleheader was special for the Badgers as they picked up their first win since October 17, 2021, when they beat the Guelph Gryphons 13-12.

The first quarter saw plenty of action as the two teams both scored three goals. Shigwadja broke the deadlock early between the two teams, netting a goal with 12:11 in the first. Sophomore Ellie Szkwyra scored Brock's second just 55 seconds after Ontario Tech equalized the game. Shigwadja's second of the match gave Brock the 3-2 advantage, before Ontario Tech drew level to end the first quarter.

The second quarter was much the same between the two teams as each got on the scoresheet four times. Woods, McGuire, Ryanne Logan and Liv Dion each contributed a goal to Brock's second quarter. After scoring once in the third quarter through McGuire, Brock's fantastic fourth quarter saw the Badgers score five, securing the 14-12 win.

Woods netted two more, ending the match with a hat trick. Shigwadja and Kennedy Smith also recorded hat tricks of their own.

Assists for the Badgers came from Shigwadja (3), Lee (2), Woods, Smith, Szkywra and Elise Vestergaard.

Over the two matches, McGuire led the Brock Badgers with six goals, while Woods had three goals and three assists.

The Brock Badgers head to Peterborough next as they face the Trent Excalibur and Queen's Gaels in a doubleheader on Sunday (Oct. 22). The gametimes are set for 10:15 a.m. and 3 p.m.
