The Badgers took on the RMC Paladins on Saturday (Oct. 21) afternoon and continued their undefeated start to the year, defeating the visitors by a score of 9-2.
Near the middle of the first period, the Brock Badgers earned their first goal of the game. Ethan Sims scored his fourth of the year after receiving a pass from junior defenceman Zachary Taylor. The sophomore centre put it top shelf past RMC goaltender Michael Davis on the power play.
A penalty shot from Christophe Cote earned the junior forward his third goal in two games. Ryan Stepien scored his third of the year as the Badgers held a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. The Badgers dominated in shots, putting up 15 as compared to RMC's four.
Tyler Burnie and Sims scored early in the second period to give the Badgers a commanding 5-0 lead. An RMC goal less than two minutes after Sim's second of the game put them on the board.
The Badgers continued their scoring ways in the second as Jacob Roach got himself on the score sheet, while Sims scored the first hat trick of his OUA career and sixth of the season. Burnie also earned his sixth of the year, scoring at the 17:33 mark to give the Badgers an 8-2 advantage. With those goals, Sims and Burnie moved themselves up to second in the OUA in goals scored.
Sophomore Matthew Riva scored his fourth of the year in the third. The Port Robinson, Ont product now has three goals in three-straight games. The goal scoring subsided in the third as Riva was the only goal scorer from either side in the final 20 minutes.
The Badgers put up a season-high 51 shots on net in the game and put relentless pressure on the visiting Paladins side throughout the contest.
Sims led the way with three goals, while Burnie had two of his own and an assist. Taylor chipped in with three helpers and forwards Justin Brack and Jared Marino delivered two each.
First-year goaltender Connor Ungar continues to shine between the pipes, making 18 saves in the win. The Calgary native leads the league with six wins and has an impressive 1.48 goals against average.
The Badgers (6-0-0) head on the road as they visit Montreal for a Friday night clash with the McGill Redbirds (4-5-1) on October 27. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on OUA.tv.
