The No. 5 ranked Brock Badgers men's hockey team took the long trip to Montreal on Friday (Oct. 27) to try and keep their undefeated start to the season going in a matchup against the McGill Redbirds. The Redbirds got the best of the Badgers on this night, winning 4-1.
The Badgers came into this one with a lot of momentum as they had outscored their opponents by a total of 20-3 over their previous three games.
In the first period, Brock fell behind after a McGill goal just over six minutes into the game.
Zachary Taylor answered back quickly on the power play for the Badgers. The third-year defender fired a shot through a crowd in front of the net and found the top corner, knotting the game at 1-1 and scoring the first goal that McGill had allowed on the penalty-kill so far this season.
A goal by McGill with just over a minute left to go in the frame left the Badgers trailing by a goal after the first 20 minutes of play.
The second period saw lots of back-and-forth action with some big chances for the both teams, but neither team being able to hold possession for an extended period of time.
After a few penalties slowed the game down, McGill scored with 3:04 left in the second to go up by a score of 3-1 heading into the third period.
In the final frame, Brock pushed hard to get back into the game but could not get by the stellar play of McGill goaltender, Alexis Shank. The Redbirds added an empty netter late in the frame to seal a 4-1 McGill victory.
Taylor's goal tonight was his second of the season, which ties him for the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) lead in goals among defenders.
Jared Marino picked up an assist on the goal bringing him to nine helpers on the year so far, putting him first in the league.
Next, up the Badgers (6-1-0) will be staying in Quebec overnight in preparation for their next game against the Concordia Stingers (6-1-0) tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 28) in Montreal.
