The Brock Badgers responded to their defeat against McGill with an impressive win over the No. 4 ranked Concordia Stingers on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 28), with Jacob Roach being crowned the overtime hero.
Around five minutes into the first, third-year centre Tyler Burnie found himself with space in the offensive zone. His shot in the slot was stopped by Stingers' goaltender Jordan Naylor.
It took the Stingers eight minutes into the opening frame to record their first shot. Freshman goaltender Connor Ungar positioned himself well to make the slot opportunity look easy.
Charles-Antoine Paiement scored for Concordia with over 13 minutes gone in the first period after converting on the power play. A shot initially from the point found its way to the winger who backhanded the puck in from just outside the crease.
Despite a strong opening from the Badgers, it was the Stingers who led the first period in shots 15-13.
Early in the second, first-year forward Matt Duarte was left with space in close after a pass from sophomore Ethan Sims. This resulted in Duarte tying the game for the Badgers and earning his first career Ontairo University Athletics (OUA) goal. Ryan Stepien picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Forwards Matthew Riva and Justin Brack found themselves on a 2-on-1 with a chance to take the lead but a perfectly-timed stick deflection from a Stingers defenseman ended the dangerous chance.
A shot through traffic found its way to a wide-open Paiement just outside the crease but he was robbed by Ungar on a phenomenal pad save.
Brock took the lead late in the second after Hamilton's Jordan Stock had his shot trickle its way in after the Badgers forward was tripped into Naylor. Despite the goalie protesting the play, the goal stood.
In the third period, the Badgers gave up four penalties. This came back to hurt the Brock side as they give up their lead late on the penalty kill. Paiement scored an identical goal to his first, backhanding the puck into an open net after a scramble in front of Ungar.
Brock got to work quickly in 3-on-3 overtime, Burnie found an open Jacob Roach on a 2-on-1 who made no mistake lifting the puck over the goalie to give the Badgers an OUA-leading seven wins on the season.
Unger stood tall in the net, making an outstanding 52 saves to keep the Badgers in the game. The Calgary product continues to lead the league in wins, earning his seventh on Saturday afternoon.
Up next, the Badgers (7-1-0) return to Canada Games Park, where they will host the Windsor Lancers (4-2-0) on Friday, November 3rd at 3 p.m. You can watch the game on OUA.tv.
