The Brock Badgers went undefeated on opening weekend, dispatching the Lakehead Thunderwolves by a score of 3-2 in an overtime thriller on Saturday (Oct. 7).
First-year forward Riley Gannon scored his first career goal just 2:31 into the game. Keighan Gerrie tied things up for Lakehead just over three minutes later. A Lakehead goal with 6:05 left gave the Thunderwolves a 2-1 lead at the first period intermission. The Badgers got into some penalty trouble in the first, giving up six penalties. However, their penalty kill held strong not surrendering a goal in the period.
Late in the second period, senior forward Jacob Roach scored his first of the season. The equalizing goal came with 2:20 left.
The third period came and went with both teams having opportunities to find the go-ahead marker. After 60 minutes, the two teams were tied and had to settle things in overtime.
In the extra period, a slashing penalty on Lakehead's Ed McNeill gave the Badgers a power play opportunity. The Badgers had a couple of close chances, including one from last night's two-goal scorer Tyler Burnie. After patiently working the puck back and forth, the Badgers finally found an opening as third-year defenceman Zach Taylor made no mistake on a one-timer blast. Taylor's first goal of the season gave the Badgers the win and a 2-0 start to the year.
First-year goaltender Connor Ungar earned his second straight win, playing between the pipes for both games of the doubleheader weekend.
Up next, the Badgers (2-0-0) visit Guelph to take on the Gryphons (0-1-0) on Thursday, October 12 at 7 p.m. You can catch the game on OUA.tv.
