The Brock Badgers women's hockey team travelled to Waterloo on Friday, Nov. 10 where they were defeated in a shootout against the league-leading Laurier Golden Hawks.
Senior defender
Madelyn Walsh kept her stellar season with her fifth of the season, tying her for second in the OUA and most among defenders.
In the first period, Brock looked very strong defensively not allowing the Golden Hawks to carry the puck into high-scoring areas.
Walsh got the scoring started in the first on the power play. The Hammonds Plains, NS native took a pass from
Allison Moore along the boards and carried the puck along the top of the slot before rifling a shot into the top corner.
The Badgers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Brock tried to extend their lead in the second period but the Golden Hawks were looking strong.
Laurier scored on the power play halfway through the period to equalize the game.
Walsh,
Madison Cronkwright and
Jenna Duarte all created some great scoring chances late in the period but the Badgers were unable to capitalize and ended the second frame tied at 1-1.
In the third period, the Badgers came out looking for a goal to break the tie and they found it on the power play.
Senior forward
Claudia Murphy took a beautiful pass in the slot from Walsh and then proceeded to fire it blocker-side to give Brock the lead.
The Badgers tried hard to hold onto their advantage but some untimely penalties gave Laurier a chance at equalizing late.
The Golden Hawks had a 5-on-3 power play late in the game and were able to score, sending the game to overtime at a scoreline of 2-2.
The overtime period saw lots of back-and-forth play with both teams having some quality chances but failing to find a game-winner, sending the game to a shootout.
Laurier was able to score on their first attempt in the shootout and unfortunately Brock could not convert any of their three attempts.
Murphy scored her third of the season which is the second-most on the Badgers.
Next up, the Badgers return home for a matchup against the York Lions Saturday, Nov. 11 at Canada Games Park with puck drop scheduled for 7 pm.
