Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Calum Morrison

Badgers show valiant effort; drop overtime thriller to No. 1 Ravens

The Brock Badgers women's basketball team fell 81-79 in an instant classic to the No. 1 Carleton Ravens on Friday, Nov. 17 in Ottawa.

Fourth-year guard Angeline Campbell put together an unbelievable performance for the Badgers with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. The Women and Gender Studies major made a game-high six three-pointers on the night, with two of them tying the game up with seconds remaining.

The Ravens were the first team to seize any. momentum, as they started to create an early lead for themselves. Oluwatito Akinnusi kept the game close for the Badgers, dropping 11 points and grabbing two rebounds in the opening frame.

In the second quarter, the Ravens picked up right where they left off in the first, establishing a larger lead, forcing a timeout from the Badgers. The Badgers came out of the timeout with momentum as Campbell, Olivia Fiorucci and Madalyn Weinert all hit massive shots from behind the arc to earn their first lead of the game. Some more back-and-forth play gave the Ravens the 38-35 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the halftime break, a huge steal from Noor Bazzi and the dish on the fastbreak to Weinert started a massive scoring run for the Badgers. The Badgers not only put the pressure on offence, but locked it down on defence, holding the Ravens to only 12 points in the quarter, helping them take a 51-50 lead.

The Ravens got off to a hot start, taking an early lead and holding onto it for most of the quarter. Carleton held a one-point lead with 30 seconds left in the game, forcing a foul from the Badgers. Ravens guard Kali Pocrnic knocked down both free throws to extend their lead with 13 seconds left. The Badgers charged down the court before Campbell pulled up from behind the arc to tie the game up with seconds left. The Ravens called a timeout to try and draw up a play, but lockdown defence from Shailah Adams and Noor Bazzi forced a bad shot and eventual overtime.

The Ravens took an early five-point lead in overtime, but the Badgers chipped away. Campbell again answered the call late in the game, draining a step back three-pointer and following free throw for the four-point play, tying the game up with 16 seconds left. The Ravens drove up the court, missing their initial shot, before Zerina Duvnjak made the putback layup at the buzzer to win the game for the Ravens.

Next up, the Badgers (2-2) will continue their road trip on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. against the Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-1). Catch the action on OUA.tv.
