A balanced effort led the Badgers men's hockey team to a 4-2 win over the nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Riley Gannon, Cale Sanders, Ethan Sims and Jared Marino all notched a goal apiece while Connor Ungar continues to impress between the pipes, making 20 saves for his 13th win of the year.
In the first, the Badgers took advantage of an early power-play opportunity, scoring five seconds after Toronto's Billy Moskal entered the penalty box. Gannon, a freshman forward, scored his third to give the Badgers the lead at the 3:58 mark. Late in the first, the Badgers scored their second as Sanders pounced on a big rebound generated by a Christophe Cote shot. Toronto's Cole Purboo scored in the final minute to reduce the Badgers lead to just one after 20 minutes of play. Brock controlled momentum in the first, putting 14 shots on net compared to Toronto's three.
The Blues changed their fortunes in the second period, outshooting the Badgers 12-8. This resulted in a goal for the home side as Ben Woodhouse scored his second of the year to tie the game. Brock had a close chance at the end of the second period, but the score remained tied.
Near the midway point of the third, Ethan Sims scored his seventh of the season, shooting the puck past the blocker of Toronto goalie Jordan Fairlie. Veteran forward Jared Marino added an empty-net goal to seal the win.
Up next, the Badgers (13-1-0) will host the visiting TMU Bold (9-3-0) on Friday, Nov. 24 at Canada Games Park for a 6 p.m. puck drop.
