Badgers drop tough division matchup

The Brock Badgers women's hockey team lost 4-1 to the Gryphons in Guelph on Thursday, Nov. 2 during an important Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division matchup against the Guelph Gryphons.

Brock and Guelph came into this game tied on nine points through five games each.

The Badgers fell behind more than six minutes into the first period. Brock goaltender Kenzie Harmison made some outstanding saves trying to keep the deficit at one.

A Guelph shot from the point in the dying seconds found its way through traffic in front of the net to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

In the second, the Badgers tried to get their offence going but unfortunately couldn't stay out of the penalty box.

Brock took four penalties in the frame but the penalty-kill unit was fantastic and was able to nullify the Guelph attack.

Feeding off the momentum from their success on the penalty kill, the other special teams unit was able to get Brock on the board with more than two minutes remaining in the second.

While on the power play, Madelyn Walsh fired a shot from the point which bounced around and found its way to Randyll Strongman in front of the net.

The Scarborough native pounced on the lose puck, firing it into the net for her first career OUA goal.

Strongman's tally made the score 2-1 in favor of Guelph headed into the third period.

In the third, the Badgers' penalty kill was finally beaten as the Gryphons notched a power-play goal to extend their lead just more than five minutes into the frame.

Brock pushed hard to get a comeback started but ultimately couldn't get anything going in the third.

Guelph added an empty-net goal with a minute left to make it a 4-1 win for the Gryphons when the final buzzer sounded.

Madelyn Walsh picked up an assist in the game bringing her point total to six on the season which is the league lead for defenders in the OUA.

Next up, the Badgers (3-3-0) will travel to Waterloo on Saturday, Nov. 4 for a matchup against the University of Waterloo Warriors (4-1-0).
