On Saturday, November 4, the Brock Badgers women's hockey team played their second road game in a row, battling with the nationally ranked Waterloo Warriors. Despite the great effort, the Badgers came up just short, falling in overtime 5-4.
The Badgers came out with renewed energy to start the game, attempting to put pressure on the Warriors.
Near the midway point of the period, Brock scored their first of the game as a cross-ice pass from Claudia Murphy led to a one-timer goal from Madison Cronkwright.
The Warriors answered back near the end of the first as Carly Orth scored her second of the year with 1:32 remaining.
Just before the period ended, the Warriors were assessed an illegal equipment penalty due to a player losing their neck guard in play.
Both teams notched eight shots in an even first period.
Early in the second, the Badgers retook the lead as Murphy scored her first of the season, matching Cronkwright's first regular season goal in the first.
The Warriors answered with a power-play goal to equalize the game.
Mere 35 seconds later, the Badgers found themselves on the board for the third time as Murphy had a sensational solo effort for her second of the game.
The fourth-year forward dug the puck out of the corner and weaved past multiple Waterloo defenders, sliding the puck past the blocker side of Waterloo goaltender Kara Mark.
Despite being outshot 13-6, the Badgers were ahead 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
It was a busy third period for the scorekeepers as a total of three goals were scored in just the first 10 minutes.
Waterloo added two goals to take the lead off the sticks of Madison Pritchard and Paige Rynne, respectively.
The Badgers showed fight as first-year forward Randyll Strongman put in her second of the season to even things up with half a period left.
Neither team could find the go-ahead marker in regulation time.
In overtime, both teams had chances, but it was the Warriors who scored the fifth and final goal as Tatum James ended the game.
Brock goaltender Kenzie Harmison made 26 saves in the loss while Murphy had an impressive showing, scoring two goals and adding two helpers. Strongman also added two assists to go with her one goal.
Up next, the Badgers remain on the road as they visit Waterloo on Friday, November 10 for a 7 p.m. clash with the Laurier Golden Hawks (8-2).
