Badgers down Varsity Blues in home opener

The Brock Badgers men's basketball team opened up Ontario University Athletics (OUA) regular season action at home on Friday, November 3, taking down the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 77-63.

The game got out to a tense start with the teams exchanging baskets and appearing evenly matched early on.

Kevaughn Ellis provided the majority of the offence for Brock in the opening frame scoring eight points, including two three-pointers.

Despite the production from the Hamilton product, the Badgers found themselves down by two after the first 10 minutes as Toronto led 18-16.

That didn't last for long though as third-year forward Michael Matas and fifth-year guard Jevon Brown caught fire in the second quarter to give the Badgers the lead.

Matas had eight points in the quarter showing off some great footwork down low. Brown provided a huge spark for the Badgers scoring 13 points in the second, including two three-pointers and a huge dunk on a breakaway that got the home crowd fired up.

Brock also turned it on defensively, holding Toronto to 13 points in the second quarter and as a result the Badgers went into halftime with a 44-31 lead.

The Badgers would not give up the lead for the rest of the game.

The third quarter saw Toronto try to make things close but timely shots from senior guard Isaiah Bujdoso and Ellis kept the Badgers out in front. Brock ended the third quarter ahead 57-50.

In the fourth, the Badgers' lead was never in trouble as Bujdoso, Matas, and Jordan Tchuente made big plays in the final frame to ensure a Brock win.

Brock took the victory by a score of 77-63 in an impressive defensive showing from head coach Willy Manigat's Badgers in their season opener.

Brown led the way for Brock on the night with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. There were great performances from many players tonight for the Badgers as Ellis contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds while Matas notched 14 points and eight rebounds. Bujdoso had a great night running the offence for Brock with 15 points, three assists and three rebounds.

Next up, the Badgers will host the York Lions on Saturday, November 4 in the Bob Davis Gymnasium at 8 p.m.
