The Brock Badgers women's basketball team picked up a 79-69 win on Friday, November 3
in their Ontario University Athletics (OUA) home opener against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
Brock came out to a flying start in their first game of the year.
The Badgers were hitting shots at a high percentage early on, getting themselves out to an 11-3 run to start the game.
On defense, they were forcing tough outside jump shots from Toronto, and the Badgers found themselves leading 29-18 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, Brock kept the pace of play high while looking to add to their advantage.
Noor Bazzi and
Oluwatito Akinnusi made some great offensive plays to extend the Badgers' lead in the quarter, but the star of the first half was junior guard
Madalyn Weinert.
The St. Catharines native made it look easy in the first half, tearing the Varsity Blues' defence apart for 21 points in 20 minutes. Weinert's stellar offensive production had Brock ahead 52-34 at the half.
The Varsity Blues did not go down without a fight, coming out strong in the third quarter and quickly erasing the Badger lead through some hot shooting and some costly Badger turnovers.
Toronto was able to tie the game at 60-60 heading into the fourth quarter.
The teams went back and forth in the first half of the final quarter, but that changed with just over three minutes left in the game.
Angeline Campbell took the ball strong to the hoop and converted an old-fashioned three-point play by making the layup, drawing the foul and making the free throw.
This play by Campbell gave the Badgers the lead and they wouldn't give it up the rest of the game.
A beautiful
Noor Bazzi jump shot with a minute left extended the Badgers' lead to seven and was the dagger, securing the win.
Brock took the game by a score of 79-69, giving themselves the ideal start to the season.
Weinert had a huge game for the Badgers in the win posting 29 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.
Brock had three other players score in double digits as
Noor Bazzi had 13 points,
Oluwatito Akinnusi chipped in with 12 and Shaila Adams had 11 in her OUA debut.
Next up, the Badgers take on the York Lions at home in Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, November 4 at 6 p.m.
