The Brock Badgers women's basketball team travelled to Waterloo on Friday, Dec. 1 where they won in overtime 76-68 against the Waterloo Warriors.
The Badgers got strong contributions from a few players including junior guard
Angeline Campbell who had a great night posting 20 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior guard/forwardÂ
Oluwatito Akinnusi contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season while fellow juniorÂ
Madalyn Weinert stuffed the stat sheet totaling 15 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, four blocks and three assists.
Brock got off to a hot start from beyond the arc in the first quarter with Campbell hitting two three-pointers early to establish a lead. Some strong interior play by Weinert during the rest of the quarter gave the Badgers a 20-14 advantage.
Waterloo turned up the intensity in the second quarter and started forcing Brock turnovers with a well-executed half-court press. The Warriors capitalized on those turnovers and quickly erased the Badgers' lead, going into the halftime break leading 35-34.
The game slowed down a bit in the third quarter with both teams struggling to connect on offence. Some scrappy play from the Badgers kept them in it despite their struggles shooting the ball. Waterloo still held the lead at 50-46Â after three quarters of play.
In the fourth quarter, the top two leading scorers in the province brought Brock back into it. Weinert and Akinnusi were able to create some great offence inside the paint to erase the Warriors' lead. Waterloo got a two-point lead back with just under 10 seconds to play, but Akinnusi was clutch for Brock, scoring to send the game into overtime.
The Badgers took control of the game in the extra five minutes of play with some stifling team defence and some stellar offensive play by Campbell and Weinert. A great comeback was completed to secure Brock's third win in a row.
Next up, the Badgers (5-3) will return to Waterloo on Saturday, Dec. 2 to square off against the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks (5-4) at 6 p.m.
