Badgers stave off elimination in OUA women's hockey playoffs

THOROLD - The Brock Badgers staved off elimination with a 4-1 win over the No. 8 Waterloo Warriors in Game 2 of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's hockey quarter-finals at Canada Games Park on Friday, Feb. 24.

Catriona Cormier and Madison Cronkwright each scored two goals and goaltender Kenzie Harmison kicked out 23 shots to backstop the Badgers to victory.

The defending OUA champion Badgers trailed 1-0 in the best-of-three series after suffering a 6-0 loss during Game 1 in Waterloo on Feb. 22.

"It feels good to finally put some pucks in the back of their net," Cormier said. "We've got to keep going every time we score because we know they can score too. We're playing to win, and no matter how many we put in we just keep going."

Cronkwright opened the scoring with a back-hand goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first period. Rebekah Feld earned an assist on the marker.

Midway through the second, Cormier tallied a goal after converting a sharp pass through traffic from a rushing captain Kaitlyn Colonna.

Waterloo's Keiara Raitt netted a goal just five minutes later before Cormier fired in her second goal of the game at 18:39.

In the third, Cronkwright put the game away with a power-play goal following an offensive zone face off. Paige Cohoon stopped a point shot from Allison Stevenson to tee up an attacking Cronkwright, who roofed the puck over Warriors goalie Carley Molnar.

Up next, the Badgers travel to Waterloo for Game 3 on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the OUA semifinals versus the Nipissing Lakers. Livestream the game on OUA.tv.
