Strong first half lifts Brock to home court win

ST. CATHARINES – After taking the lead with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Brock Badgers women's basketball team never looked back as they led the rest of the way in a 57-47 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in Bob Davis Gym on Friday night.
 
Despite the slow start, Brock was able to hold Toronto to just eight points in the first quarter, taking an 18-8 lead into the first break. The Badgers were able to roll from that point forward, finishing the night shooting 37 percent from the floor, outrebounding the Varsity Blues 45-28, and notching 25 points off turnovers and 21 bench points.

On offence, Brock was led once again by second-year guard Madalyn Weinert who registered a game-high 20 points in 25 minutes, shooting 7-for-11 on the night. The strong performance marks her fifth 20-plus point outing this season. Weinert also notched six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block.
 
Second-year forward Olivia Fiorucci also added 10 points from the starting lineup, while veteran guard Noor Bazzi knocked down a trio of three-pointers to score 11 off the bench. Also impressive on the glass for Brock was second-year guard Kaley DeMont who pulled down a new career-high 11 rebounds in the win, adding five points, an assist and one block.

Toronto proved to be relient on the outside shooting of Ellen Ougrinov and Lauren Boers who combined for six three point field goals. Ougrinov finished with a team-high 18 points, while Boers recorded 10.
 
The Badgers are right back in action tomorrow night at the Bob Davis Gym, challenging the visiting Guelph Gryphons.. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purcahsed on University Tickets, while the game is also available online via OUA.tv.
