ST. CATHARINES – In a critical late season contest at home on Saturday night, the Brock Badgers women's basketball team came up just short in a 70-65 loss to the Guelph Gryphons at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
In one of the tightest back-and-forth battles of the season for the Badgers in which they led 19-17 after the first quarter, a costly second frame allowed for the Gryphons to go into the half with a four-point lead which Guelph would never relinquish through the remainder of the contest. Both teams were nearly identical in shooting percentage and rebounds, along with nailing seven three-point field goals. However, the only difference proved to be on the offensive glass where the Gryphons were able to secure 13 second chance points, compared to just five for the Badgers on the night.
Statistically,
Madalyn Weinert registered her sixth 20-plus point outing and seventh double-double of the season finishing the night with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds, while also adding six assists, two steals and one block. Both
Allison Addy and
Olivia Fiorucci also broke double-digits for the Badgers notching 13 and 10 points apiece.
Meanwhile, the Gryphons were lifted to victory by a 24 point performance from Mackeely Shantz, who also filled out her stat line with eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and three blocks.
Brock will continue their playoff seeding push with another two big games on the road this coming week, beginning with a showdown in Windsor versus the Lancers on Friday, Feb. 10. Tip-off for the road contest is set for 6 p.m., with the game available online via
