Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Joshua Martins

Badgers seniors game spoiled by Thunderwolves

THOROLD - On a cold Saturday afternoon, the No. 10 nationally ranked Brock Badgers men's hockey team were unable to contain the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a scrappy 4-1 contest at Canada Games Park.

Prior to puck drop the Badgers honoured several graduating seniors ahead of the team's second last home game of the regular season. Those recognized included Tyler Rollo, Christian Girhiny, Jared Marino, Johnny Shaefer, Matthew Barnes, Christian DeDonato, Frankie Puccie, and Cole Thiessen. The large group of graduating seniors also included Adam Berg and Justin Brack who returned following recognition during last year's Badgers Seniors Game.

On the ice, the Thunderwolves were able to secure two early goals in the first period before the Badgers retaliated with a goal of their own courtesy of veteran forward Berg, The single tally for Brock marked the only goal of the contest for the home side. Centre Tyler Burnie and forward Jacob Roach each contributed an assist on the goal.

Despite trailing, the Badgers were relentless all throughout the game, dominating the shots on goal column 34-23. This persistency however, also translated to aggressiveness, with the Badgers landing themselves in the penalty box 10 times for a total of 20 minutes of penalties to just 12 total minutes for the Thunderwolves.

Consistently battling a man-down, Brock starting goaltender Mariio Peccia played well with 20 total saves in the Saturday afternoon showdown. Lakehead goalie Max Wright was a thorn for the Badgers, earning the win with 33 stops.

Brock will look to bounce back against Guelph on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Guelph. The full game can be streamed on OUA.TV.
