GUELPH - The Brock Badgers men's hockey fell in penalty shots versus the Guelph Gryphons, 4-3, on Thursday evening.
The loss bumps the Badgers record to 17-8-1 (W-L-OTL) on the season, placing them alone in third place in the OUA West division. With one game remaining in the regular season, Brock will look to maintain their third place position with a season finale win this coming Saturday.
On the ice, Guelph set the tone early with a goal in the first three minutes of action to initiate the high-scoring rollercoaster contest. Not long after though, Badgers captain
Jared Marino and first-year Brock forward
Jordan Stock each found the back of the net to put the visitors up 2-1 before the end of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, the game picked back up in the third with Guelph taking the lead 3-2 in the final five minutes of action. This didn't last long as centre
Tyler Burnie asnwered back for the Badgers to send the game to overtime and eventually a shootout after.
After a long fought battle, Guelph goaltender Colton Incze proved to be the difffernce-maker turning aside all three Brock penalty shots to hand the Gryphons a 1-0 victory in the shootout to seal the win.
Despite this, Brock showed great control throughout the opening two periods, winning the shots on goal column 27-12 through the opening two frames, and 37-31 overall.
Forward
Jacob Roach continued to add to his team-leading scoring run for the Badgers registering two assists, alongside
Johnny Schaefer,
Adam Berg,
Ethan Sims and Burnie who each picked up one on the night.
Badgers goalie
Roman Basran made 27 saves in just his second loss of the season.
Brock will look to bounce back against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, Feb. 11 in their final regular season contest. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Canada Games Park. The full game can be streamed on
