Consistency proves key for No. 5 Badgers over Gryphons

ST. CATHARINES - Earning their eighth consecutive win, the No. 5 nationally ranked Brock Badgers men's basketball team knocked off the visiting Guelph Gryphons by a final score of 91-59 on Saturday night at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Both teams came into the Saturday night contest red-hot as the Badgers earned a hard-fought last second win over Toronto the night prior, and the Gryphons delivered on a huge upset victory over No. 4 Queen's. However, the stark difference in competition level was evident throughout the night at Bob Davis Gym as Brock defensively held Guelph to 15 or less points in three of the four quarters played, while also scoring 23 or more in three quarters on the offensive end as well. And for the Badgers points came from everywhere, outscoring Guelph 22-5 on points off turnovers, 21-5 on second chance points, and 46-26 on bench points.

The 32-point victory for the Badgers saw four different Brock players break double-digit scoring, led by a 16 points for guard Kascius Small-Martin who tallied the game-high scoring number in just 19 minutes of action.

Badgers starting point guard Isaiah Bujdoso chipped in with 14 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals, while veteran guard Daniel Caldwell notched 12 total points on 4-for-5 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Friday night hero Jordan Tchuente also added his sixth double-double of the season scoring 10 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

For the Gryphons, Khalis Ismail was the team's top scorer finishing with 14 points off the bench.

Heading into the final stretch of the regular season, the win lifts the Badgers record to 15-3, placing them alone in first place for both the OUA Central division and the OUA itself. The only other team currently with just three losses on the season are the 14-3 Queen's Gaels who hold a game in hand.

The Badgers now hit the road for a pair of road games next weekend, beginning with the Windsor Lancers on Friday, Feb. 10. Tip-off versus the OUA West top seed is scheduled for 8 p.m. with the action livestreamed on OUA.tv.
