The Brock Badgers women's rugby team suffered a 33-3 loss to the No. 2 ranked Queen's Gaels on Friday (Sept. 29) night at Alumni Field.
The Badgers got the scoring started, kicking a penalty goal in the fourth minute off the foot of Paige DeNeve to make it 3-0.
Queen's scored the first try of the game and added a convert to take their first lead of the contest 7-3. Another Gaels' try and convert doubled their lead near the end of the first half to make it 14-3.
A third Queen's try extended the lead 19-3. A try and convert in the 62nd minute from the Gaels increased their advantage.
A late Gaels' try would be the final score of the contest as the team from Kingston came away with the 33-3 win.
Brock's Player of the Match was scrum half and captain Abigail Wade who had fantastic box kicks and phenomenal defence. Her delivery of the ball kept the Badgers' offence moving throughout the game.
First-year prop Brooke Rempel was strong defensively and on offence, while Julia Gregory led in the back field, making good decisions tactically and delivering important tackles.
Head coach Mark Smerdon is optimistic about what the team learned from this contest.
"There was some phenomenal play out there from our team. I'm really proud of how we gave Queen's a run. We're just really encouraged by what the girls are learning and how they're playing for us, so the hope is we just keep doing that from now into the playoffs."
Up next, the Badgers (3-2) will honour their seniors during the final home game of the season against the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks (2-2). Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.
