The Brock Badgers women's hockey team travelled to Guelph on Thursday, Jan. 11, where they were shutout 5-0 against the No. 5 ranked Guelph Gryphons.
The nationally ranked Gryphons came out with a lot of energy in this one forcing a number of Brock turnovers early on. The Badgers played some quality defence in their zone but were having trouble maintaining possession of the puck and entering the Gryphons' zone. Guelph scored just over the midway point of the frame and then added a second goal on the power play in the dying seconds to hold a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
Guelph took three penalties in the second period. which allowed the Badgers to finally create some offensive momentum. Brock had some quality chances courtesy of
Randyll Strongman and
Jenna Duarte but were unable to beat Guelph goalie Martina Fedel. The Gryphons added two more goals in the second and led 4-0 heading into the third.
Brock was unable to get on the board in the third period despite their best efforts. Megan Chittick added Guelph's fifth and final goal on the power play.
First-year Brock goalie
Ava Cruikshank, who came into the game partway through the second period, made some fantastic saves in the final frame. The Ottawa product registered 13 saves on 14 shots during her first taste of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) action.
