The Brock Badgers women's basketball team won their third game in a row as they dispatched the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds on Friday, Jan. 12 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
40 points is the largest margin of victory the Badgers have put up against an opponent since November 14, 2014, when Brock defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 103-31.
First-year guard Brookelyn Keltos scored her first career Ontario University Athletics (OUA) basket early in the second quarter and did not look back from there, shooting 44 per cent from three and finishing with 14 points. Junior guard Madalyn Weinert led Brock with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Brock got out to a hot start and never looked back, putting up 24 points in the quarter. The Badgers utilized stifling defence early, putting Algoma out of their rhythm. Algoma shot 1-for-14 from the field and was not able to hit a three-pointer in the quarter, while the home side shot 80 per cent from behind the arc.
Keltos, the local St. Catharines product, got the fans excited by knocking down two straight three-pointers early in the frame. The lead got as large as 32 after three consecutive layups from Weinert made it 40-8. After twenty minutes of play, the Badgers held a 44-13 advantage.
The third quarter saw the Thunderbirds and Badgers shoot at an identical 50 per cent from the field. Weinert continued to dominate down low for the Badgers, putting up nine in the frame, while Allison Addy had an empathic rejection to end the quarter. Despite the Thunderbirds shooting their best percentage of the game in the quarter, the Badgers held strong up 63-29.
In the final frame, the Badgers' scoring blitz continued. A seven-point run was capped off by a Keltos three-pointer to go up 72-31. Brock had their lowest scoring total of the game at 14 but was able to utilize strong defence to hold any thoughts of an Algoma comeback at bay.
Up next, the Badgers (8-4) will travel to Guelph on Saturday, Jan. 13 to take on the Guelph Gryphons (9-4). You can watch the game on OUA.tv.
