Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Aidan Cvetich

No. 9 Badgers continue to roll with win over Mustangs

The No. 9 ranked Brock Badgers men's hockey team remain undefeated at home after a 3-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Thursday, Jan. 18 at Canada Games Park.

This was Brock's fourth win in a row and their 18th on the season, which is the most in Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

Senior forward Jacob Roach continued his dominant season with a goal and an assist for the Badgers. The goal was Roach's 16th of the year, tying him for the lead in points in the OUA with 36. Connor Ungar was perfect for Brock making 23 saves en route to his second shutout of the year. Sophomore defender AJ Cook picked up his first career OUA goal in his fourth appearance for the team this season.

Brock started out on the back foot, as they took a tripping penalty under two minutes into the game. A stellar penalty kill kept the Mustangs off the board and allowed Brock to get their offence going shortly after. Seven minutes into the period, Tyler Burnie sent a pass out from behind the net and Roach shot a one-timer glove side to give the Badgers the lead. Brock would hold that 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

The second period was action packed as nine penalties were handed out between the teams throughout the period. But oddly enough, the lone goal of the period came during 5-on-5 play. Jared Marino made some incredible dekes to create a scoring chance but was shut down. During the ensuing scramble in front of the net, the puck found its way out to Cook who fired it low past Western goaltender Dylan Miskiw to double Brock's lead.

The trend of penalties continued into the third period as five more were called in the frame. Western couldn't find offensive momentum to get themselves back into the contest. Brock's power-play unit finally got it done late in the game, with Marino lasering a one-timer from Roach for Brock's third and final goal of the night.

Next up, the Badgers (18-5-0) will play host to the Waterloo Warriors (3-16-1) on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Canada Games Park. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Purchase your tickets at https://brocku.universitytickets.com/. The game can also be seen on OUA.tv.
