The nationally ranked Brock Badgers men's hockey team won their fifth game in the row, beating the Waterloo Warriors 4-3 on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Canada Games Park.
Junior forwards Tyler Burnie and Cole Tymkin demonstrated impressive skill, each providing a goal and an assist for the team. Third-year forward Justin Kyle and second-year forward Ryan Stepien also added goals.
First-year goaltender Connor Ungar made 31 saves for the win and continues to lead the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with nineteen wins. The Calgary product's 0.931 save percentage ranks third in the league.
Brock was eager to get on the board as Stepien scored the first goal of the game at the 8:09 mark. Waterloo quickly responded, scoring their first goal less than a minute later. Determined to regain their lead, the Badgers upped the pressure with some fierce shots on net. Kyle rose to the occasion, scoring his first goal of the season and putting the team ahead. Brock held onto their lead for several minutes until Waterloo scored a second goal. The first period closed with a tied score of 2-2.
Tensions rose as the Badgers were set on getting ahead in the second period. Burnie scored Brock's third goal on a nifty backhand, putting them back in the lead. Tymkin got another point for the Badgers just a few minutes later. The Warriors followed up with their third goal shortly afterward, but multiple penalties kept them from evening the score. Brock was on the attack, totalling 19 shots in the period as compared to Waterloo's eight. The team maintained a 4-3 lead at the end of the second.
Both teams were looking for chances to score in the third period, but neither were able to put the puck in the net. Hoping to change the direction of the game, Waterloo pulled their goalie with two minutes left in the game. An empty net wasn't enough to help the Warriors, and the Badgers pulled away with the win.
Next up, the Badgers (19-5-0) will make their way to Windsor on Saturday, Jan. 27 and play against the Lancers. Grab your tickets at https://brocku.universitytickets.com/ or catch the game live on OUA.tv.
